Hospital Added Costs

Being admitted into private hospital requires you to pay an “excess” on your account. This excess allows you to be covered for a number of things, such as your bed fee, theatre fee, food, care from nurses, and medication given to you whilst you’re staying in hospital.  


For example: if you pay a $500 excess and the overall charges for your stay (including everything listed above) is $2400, we’ll cover the $1900 above the excess you’ve paid. 


However, there are some services and items that are not covered under your excess. These are typically things that are listed as items you can request, such as a TV (if there isn’t one), additional entertainment services (like Foxtel) or your partner staying overnight with you. Also, medication that is given to you on discharge which you must pick up from the pharmacy before leaving isn’t covered under your excess. You’ll need to claim these under your extras if you have the appropriate pharmaceutical cover. 


If you’re unsure whether or not something will be covered during your stay, do make sure to contact us so we can check for you, as it can be a confusing process. If you’re at the hospital and you’re offered a service ,and the hospital is unsure whether it’s covered under their contract with us, advise them to contact us to discuss the service in question. This way, you won’t get any unexpected charges and you’ll know exactly where you stand.
